The Repair Shop expert Dominic Chinea issued a warning to fans who want to try and restore their own worn-down items at home.

Speaking in a new interview, the metal expert gave advice to beginners, who had been inspired by the BBC series.

He warned: “Be careful with any family heirlooms – they’re not the right pieces to practice

“There are so many options out there, get online and find the right course for you to learn the craft from an expert.

“I’d also tell people to experience as many different projects and crafts as possible until you find the one that clicks with you. Trust me, you’ll find a craft you love.”

When asked who his favourite person to collaborate with on the show, Dominic admitted was art conservator Lucia.

“Collaborations are great – truly, everyone on the show loves what they do, so it doesn’t feel like a job,” he added to Prima.

“The way she (Lucia) matches up the colours on paintings is mesmerising – she’s super talented.”

The TV star went on to explain the workshop in the barn is “unique” and a lot of it is down to “attitude”.

“Everyone gets stuck at some point and there’s no shame in it – we’re all happy to share our knowledge and willing to help,” he stated.

The latest episode of The Repair Shop paid a tribute to the NHS, with Dominic sharing his own heartbreaking story.

The expert explained he wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the NHS.

As he began to restore a special Thomas The Tank Engine trolly, Dominic said: “One wrong move with this paintbrush and he’ll end up having googly cross-eyes and scaring away the kids on the ward, which is the last thing we want,

He went on to share: “When I was a newborn baby, I was actually in intensive care for a good week or two.

“I had quite a serious problem with one of the pipes coming from my stomach, it sort of closed itself up and I couldn’t keep down any food. It was honesty a terrifying time for my mum.

“Without the NHS and children’s wards like this one, I literally wouldn’t be here now.

“So it’s a real honour, and I’m actually really proud to be able to give something back.”

The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
