‘SNL’ pokes fun at JoJo Siwa’s “bad girl” rebrand

Saturday Night Live poked fun at JoJo Siwa‘s recent edgy rebrand in a new sketch this weekend.

The singer and former Dance Moms star dropped her first grown-up single ‘Karma’ in April, revealing her dramatic new look.

In a press release, the song was announced as the start of a new era that would “kickstart an unfiltered, undeniable, and unrestrained phase for the record-breaking star”.

In SNL‘s latest ‘Weekend Update’ segment, Chloe Fineman posed as the dancer and singer while dressed in the same glittery black body suit she wears in the ‘Karma’ music video.

“Wow, oh my god, JoJo!” said host Colin Jost in response to the singer’s new look. “That’s right, Colin; I’m a bad girl now!” replied ‘Siwa’, adding: “Yeah, it’s a pretty big change. I used to be way more sparkles and now I’m black sparkles.”

The sketch also saw Fineman joke that she was the “first gay girl in the world”, a tongue-in-cheek reference to Siwa’s claim that she was taking on a new genre called “gay pop”.

She also joked that she’s in her “bad girl era” and “I even do cigarettes”.

The SNL actor also took on Siwa’s viral dance move that’s accompanied her various ‘Karma’ performances.

Elsewhere in the sketch, Fineman joked that “no one my age has done this”, which comes after many onlookers noted the parallels between her and pop provocateur Miley Cyrus, who also started out as a child star before pivoting into mainstream pop.

Fans have even began speculating that ‘Karma’ actually first existed as a scrapped demo from the Hannah Montana star back in 2011.

In a new interview, Siwa spoke out about the comparisons to Cyrus and said that she’s flattered.

“When I was 8, Miley had her ‘Bangerz’ moment and I was like, ‘All I want is to have that one day.’ I want that,” she said on a new episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast. “Honestly since I was 15 my whole inner circle has been talking about it and getting excited for it.”

She continued that she is “proud” to share ‘Karma’, and that the “full 180 moment” is something that she has “always wanted”.
