How to start Short-Sighted Ambitions

You find the quest “Short-Sighted Ambitions” when you reach the city of Bakbattahl in the kingdom of Battahl. Talk to Issac at Issac’s Wares in the Mercantile Ward. You can buy stuff from him, but you’ll start the quest once his dialogue ends.

He’ll task you with bringing him a ripened Quince, a fruit native to the Battahl region. Quince is found throughout the rocky landscape and has a rare chance of dropping from the flying Harpy variants in Battahl. However, to ripen the Quince, you must wait a few in-game days. Alternatively, certain people you help throughout the kingdom might give you an already-ripened Quince for saving them from monsters.

But after obtaining the ripened Quince, head back to Issac and give him the fruit. Wait a few in-game days and then return to him. He’ll have one less eye, but end up asking you to find the second volume of “On the Transference of Souls” he’s been reading.

How to get the bad ending

The Grimoire Issac speaks of is none other than the book “On the Transference of Souls 2.” You can find the Grimoire at Ibrahim’s Scrap Store at the Checkpoint Rest Town for 2,000 G. Purchase the book and head back to Bakbattahl, something I expedited by using Ferrystones and Portcystals in both towns.

Once you reach Issac, give him the Grimoire and he’ll thank you by asking you to accompany him to his home to see the fruits of your labor. Walk a short distance with him, and a cutscene will play out with him and his family. Once the dust settles, Issac will realize that nothing changed, so he decides to go back to peddling his wares with his family.

Unfortunately, the remains of his family lie in front of him, turned into a pile of sand. He cannot fathom the consequences of his actions and just sits there staring at the sand that used to be his family, ending the quest. You receive 3,000 XP and a Ring of Disfavor can be grabbed in the sand of Issac’s family.

How to get the good ending

Conversely, if you’d like to get a more uplifting and profitable ending, you’ll need to do a bit of extra work. You still need to go buy the Grimoire, but don’t immediately head back to Bakbattahl. Instead, take advantage of Ibrahim’s forgery abilities and ask him to make a forgery of the book. It costs 2,400 G and you’ll have to wait a few days in-game before the request has been fulfilled.

Return to Ibrahim and grab the fake book which is titled “On the Transit of Souls 2.” With both books in hand, head back to Issac and talk to him. He still asks for the Grimoire, except this time you’ll want to give him the fake book.

Follow Issac back to his home and view the cutscene again. It largely plays out the same, except this time the book doesn’t work, and Issac’s family is still alive. He questions why it didn’t work, but ultimately gives up Grimoire reading and goes back to being a humble merchant trying to provide for his family.

You’ll still get the 3,000 XP, but instead of the ring you get a whopping 16,000 G and you get to keep the Grimoire. Combining both volumes of “On the Transference of Souls” allows you to cast the spell Celestial Paean but it’s unfortunately a one-time spell. After a quest like this, you and your pawns deserve some rest. But don’t bother going to the insanely priced Bakbattahl Inn if you value your coin.
