While it announced the Nintendo Switch’s successor, to be unveiled by March 31st, 2025, Nintendo isn’t giving up on the original console (which has sold 141.32 million units). It recently forecasted 13.5 million Switch consoles sold in the fiscal year 2025, alongside 165 million software sales.

In its Financial Results Explanatory Material, the company stated, “Nintendo Switch has entered its eighth year since launch, and while it will be challenging to sustain the same sales momentum as before, we will work to maintain high user engagement with the hardware and invigorate the platform so that more consumers continue to play Nintendo Switch for longer.”

If it meets the current targets, the Nintendo Switch will have sold 154.82 million units, beating the Nintendo DS and its 154.02 million lifetime sales. The latter is the second best-selling console of all time, right behind the PlayStation 2 at 160 million. Of course, how far Switch sales will fall off once its successor is available remains to be seen.

In the meantime, it will host a new Nintendo Direct in June to outline upcoming Switch titles for the latter half of 2024. There won’t be any new details for the Nintendo Switch successor, so stay tuned for updates in the months after.
