Roto Force is an upcoming twin-stick shooter for iOS and Android from publisher Plug In Digital Games and developer Accidentally Awesome. It started life as an entry called Pixel Soldier for GBJAM 5 in October 2016, where it placed 12th out of 398 games for overall gameplay.

Things have likely changed since then, leading to the frantic 2D bullet hell shooter you see in the trailer below. Roto Force promises to put your reflexes to the test as you battle your way through nine different locales littered with enemies and obstacles. Why? Because your boss says so.

You play as an intern who must follow his boss’ orders to the letter, which, in the world of Roto Force, means battling against wave upon wave of enemies. It’s not just standard fodder you’ll face, though. There are 30 mini-bosses and ten main bosses that will crop up as you progress.

There are more weapons to unlock as you progress, each with a distinct shot style to help you take down your foes. If you do manage to reach the final boss and vanquish them, there’s a higher difficulty mode to beat called Senior Intern.

Accidentally Awesome has also focused on accessibility, including several options to make the game easier for everyone to enjoy. Additionally, the developers say the controls are simple to use, but there is controller support for anyone who struggles with touchscreen inputs.

As someone old enough to remember the Game Boy, I adore the aesthetic of Roto Force. However, whether or not my brain can keep up with the frantic on-screen action is another matter entirely. Regardless, I look forward to trying it when it arrives next month.

Roto Force will release on the App Store and Google Play sometime in July. It will be free-to-download with a $4.99 in-app purchase to unlock the entire game. Additionally, it will also release on Steam for $7.99
