Actor Robert Pattinson has spoken up about the “insidious” male body standards when working in and out of the film industry.

Speaking in a recent cover story interview with ES Magazine, Pattinson shared what it’s like getting into shape for various movie roles, such as The Batman, saying that he realized the negative effect of constantly checking his calorie intake.

“Even if you’re just watching your calorie intake, it’s extraordinarily addictive–and you don’t quite realize how insidious it is until it’s too late,” Pattinson said. The actor went on to say that he has, “basically tried every fad you can think of, everything except consistency,” adding that he wants to “try consistency” in 2023.

“I once ate nothing but potatoes for two weeks, as a detox. Just boiled potatoes and Himalayan pink salt. Apparently, it’s a cleanse… you definitely lose weight.”

Pattinson said that he’s tried several other diets like keto, saying, “I was like, ‘Oh, there’s a diet where you just eat charcuterie boards and cheese all the time?’ But I didn’t realize that you can’t have beer as it completely defeats the purpose.”

Back in 2020, during an interview with GQ where the actor discussed getting into shape for The Batman, he mentioned that he didn’t have a workout routine. In the ES magazine interview, he added that he “got in so much trouble for saying that I don’t work out, even from my trainer, who was like, ‘Why would you say that?'”

Pattinson has also shared some insight on his next movie, Mickey 17, from Parasite director Bong Joon-ho.
