Review Roundup For John Wick: Chapter 4

0

We’re thinking he’s almost back. Keanu Reeves returns as the titular character in John Wick: Chapter 4 on March 24. Early reviews are starting to go live, and the action series seems to have another hit on its hands.

On top of that, John Wick: Chapter 4 might have the best start at the box office in the franchise’s history. Tracking from earlier this month expects the action flick to rake in around $60 million to $70 million opening weekend domestically.

The High Table is still after Mr. Wick in the upcoming film. This time, he’ll be going up against Marquis de Gramont (portrayed by It’s Bill Skarsgard). Wick will also cross paths with another High Table member who’s an old friend, Caine (portrayed by Donnie Yen).

Over on GameSpot sister site Metacritic, John Wick: Chapter 4 has a 76 metascore at the time of publishing. Check out some review excerpts below.

IGN — 10/10

“It seemed like an impossible task, but the Baba Yaga has a history of delivering on those: John Wick: Chapter 4 stands above its predecessors–and the past decade’s worth of action films as a whole–as a modern epic, something Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski have been driving at since 2014.” — Tom Jorgensen [Full review]

The Hollywood Reporter

“Bigger, badder, bolder, longer, and featuring nearly more spectacular set pieces than one movie can comfortably handle, this epic action film practically redefines the stakes. If at times it’s hard to avoid the feeling that the excessive mayhem is coming dangerously close to overkill, that seems suitable for a film series featuring body counts higher than some wars.” — Frank Sheck [Full review]

Variety

“Is Chapter 4 too long? You bet it is. At moments, it’s like the action film as liturgical church service. Yet the movie is conceived as a knowingly overstuffed gift to John Wick fans, and on that level it succeeds. The marquis keeps trying to assassinate Wick before the morning of the duel, and this results in several delectable fight sequences.” — Owen Gleiberman [Full review]

Consequence — C+

“Watching John Wick: Chapter 4 sometimes felt like watching an above-average assembly cut. At an unwieldy two hours and 49 minutes, your eye will immediately be drawn to what cuts through the noise–and there are plenty of these moments. But “moments” does not a well-told “movie” make.” — Gregory Lawrence [Full review]

Slant — 2 Stars Out Of 4

“With each subsequent John Wick film, though, Stahelski and company have further expanded the world in which the series is set, exploring the inner workings of the council of crime lords known as the High Table and the various rules and consequences that regulate behavior in specific settings and situations. They’ve continued to add new fetishistic objects as signifiers of broad ideas–honor, loyalty, professionalism, you name it–as well as flashier sets. And in this gradual development and expansion of the Wickaverse, the filmmakers seem to have lost the thread of what makes the first and, at times, second film in the series work so well.” — Derek Smith [Full review]
