The critical and commercial success that Capcom has enjoyed with the Resident Evil series has continued to grow increasingly more impressive ever since the franchise’s revival in 2017 with Resident Evil 7, and it seems like it’s about to hit new peaks with the recently-released Resident Evil 4 remake. In fact, it turns out the critically acclaimed remake has enjoyed the series’ biggest launch on Steam to date.

As per Steam data tracking site SteamDB, the game saw a peak concurrent user count on Steam of 140,240 players on launch day, making it the biggest launch for a Resident Evil game. It has surpassed the previous franchise record-holding numbers of Resident Evil Village, which saw a peak of 106,631 players.

Meanwhile, the Resident Evil 4 remake has also exceeded the peak concurrent user count for 2020’s Resident Evil 3 remake (60,293 players), 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake (74,227 players), and Resident Evil 7 (20,449). It should be interesting to see how much the game sells cumulatively across all platforms at launch- presumably, details on that will be shared by Capcom in the coming days.

In our review of the Resident Evil 4 remake, we awarded it a score of 10/10, saying, “Resident Evil 4 perfectly captures the tone and strengths of the original game, while also managing to improve upon it in truly meaningful ways. In doing so, it once again becomes a standard-bearer for the survival horror genre, while also setting a new bar for Capcom as a developer, for video game remakes, and for the Resident Evil franchise as a whole.” Read the full review through here.

Resident Evil 4’s remake is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PC. It will be receiving the fan-favourite mode, The Mercenaries, as free DLC on April 7, while exclusive PlayStation VR2 content is also in the works. Meanwhile, reports have claimed that Separate Ways, a campaign focused on Ada, will be released as paid DLC down the line.
