Presenter Nick Knowles recently travelled to Norway, Vietnam and Mexico in the new railway series, but Good Morning Britain presenters Charlotte Hawkins and Ben Shephard were more intrigued by a series that aired earlier this month. Into The Grand Canyon with Nick Knowles aired on Channel 5, and the adventurous DIY SOS host admitted he’d been left “terrified” during filming.

Nick tries his hand at anything as he films programmes, and while visiting the American landmark, the 60-year-old found himself in a “terrifying” situation.

“Another adventure that you had was in the Grand Canyon, where we understand you got a little bit stuck at one point,” Charlotte stated.

Getting up from his chair, Nick replied: “Yeah well, if I stand up for everybody just for a second as well, I’m like – if you look at the size of me, I’m a little bit, you know…”

He added: “There aren’t many TV presenters that are 18 stone and a former rugby player, like me.

“So, they took me down 200 metres underground into the sort of horizontal chimneys-“

“That is my worst fear, any sort of caving,” presenter Ben cut in to confess.

“I was terrified,” Nick admitted as footage showed him journeying through small gaps in the rocky space.

“Nick, I’m not sure I could do that,” a concerned-looking Ben remarked.

“I had to control my breathing, and they said to get through to this thing.

“And so I got through and I got wedged about halfway through and I said, ‘I’ve got to go back,’ and they were like, ‘you can’t go back.'”

Thankfully Nick made it out of the caves unscathed and was able to tell the tale.

He went on to explain how he wants to be an example to his children about facing fears.
