You’ll need the best companions to save the world in Fire Emblem Engage. Here’s how to get them.
In the history of Elyos, there has yet to be a war won by a single individual. In Fire Emblem Engage, you play as the Divine Dragon, a powerful immortal being who protects the realms from the darkness. Despite this grandiose title and the extra abilities that come with it, you too will need help if you are to come out of each battle alive.
There are many characters you’ll encounter throughout your playthrough, some of which will become companions that you can control on the battlefield. Your roster will grow over time, and you’ll naturally find some favorites you’ll take with you into every battle. Here’s how you can acquire new companions on your journey to save the world.
Main Story Companions
Like the Fire Emblem games that came before, Fire Emblem Engage has you teaming up with the pivotal people living throughout the many realms. These characters are often princes and princesses, battle-scared veterans, and the occasional wildcard randos with an extra sprinkling of personality.
As you progress through the main story, you’ll naturally encounter characters like Prince Diamant and Princess Celine as your journey takes you into their home territories. Other characters will start off as enemies you encounter in battle, who will later join your ranks after certain story events unfold. Regardless of which way you meet them, these are the characters who are typically your A-Team. They have some of the most powerful and unique abilities in the game and are a must-have in every battle.
Additional Companions
Not everyone who joins your army is going to be a main character. Some of them will function as seemingly replaceable troops to fill the ranks. You can still get to know them in your downtime like the main characters, but they typically don’t have as much depth or uniqueness in ability.
You’ll acquire these companions during or after certain types of battles. If you are in a battle that has an Ally Phase, then there is likely a soldier or villager with a knack for magic there to recruit. During the battle, these characters will have a talk bubble next to them. If you move your character to the adjacent tile, you’ll have the option to use this turn to talk to them. Upon doing so, they will immediately join your ranks, allowing you to control them like your other characters. If you don’t talk to them during the battle, they’ll continue to make their moves during the Ally phase, and will join your team after the battle has ended.
