The classic Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals OVA series directed by the legendary Rintaro is finally getting an HD re-release.
Animax announced the classic 1994 OVA (original video animation) series is getting its first high-definition re-release on February 25th, with all four episodes getting broadcasted in one run. In case you missed it – check out our review of Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals.
Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals made its debut in Japan back in 1994 and was previously only released on VHS and Laserdisc. The western home release was handled by Urban Vision in two volumes on VHS. After the license was lost, the series was never re-released.
The story in Legend of the Crystals is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy V, albeit taking place 200 years after the events of the mainline RPG. It stars the swordsman Prettz and the summoner Linally, who is a direct descendent of FFV protagonist Bartz.
The series was the first animated media production based on the Final Fantasy series, and as mentioned was the first direct sequel to a game in the series.
Legend of the Crystals (titled simply Final Fantasy in Japan) is generally considered a classic in comparison to the later and lesser Final Fantasy: Unlimited animated series, which also got an HD re-release earlier this month on Animax.
It remains to be seen if Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals will get a proper home re-release in high-definition, however considering many less popular OVA series have gotten the treatment, we’ll likely and finally get Legend of the Crystals in HD, at home.
