Embracer Q4 financials – good for Gloomhaven, bad for ELEX

Embracer, who own just about everybody if you haven’t been paying attention, released their Q4 (January-March) financials today, including an ongoing livestreamed sofa chat. With so many companies and games under one header we’re unlikely to get extremely minute details, but there’s some general results we can draw some conclusions from.

First up, both Gloomhaven from Asmodee and Evil Dead: The Game reached 500k downloads – Saber’s Evil Dead in just five days. Decent numbers for one smaller title and one double-A hit. We don’t have any player numbers on Evil Dead as it is not available on Steam, while Gloomhaven has a daily peak in the 2,000 range on Steam.

On the other side of the scale, Embracer says ELEX II “did not live up to management’s financial expectations in the quarter but we are expecting a positive ROI over time.” While it has reasonable reviews on Steam, the game didn’t seem to set the world alight. Finally, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands “has been very well received by critics and players” but “there were no royalties recognized in the quarter.”

Upcoming is Saints Row, which Embracer believes “is expected to step change the pace of organic growth” once it releases. There’s also Space Marine II, which Saber Interactive CEO Matt Karch spoke about during the livestream and said he and the company are ludicrous excited for. Similar was said for the KOTOR Remake, and Karch was positive on both games development and eventual quality.

Naturally there’s also notes in both the livestream and the press release about the ongoing purchase of various companies and IPs, including the recent purchases from Square Enix. Embracer ain’t slowing down on that front.
