If you’ve been playing Elden Ring for at least an hour or two, you’ve probably come across Spirit Ashes: weird spell-like things that go in your item slots. Well what are they? How do I use them? In our Elden Ring spirit ashes guide we’ll explain what you’re likely missing for jolly cooperation with the remnants of monsters.
Spirit Ashes are basically summons that can be cast in most combat situations and are different from multiplayer summoning or NPC summoning where you get a human ally to help you. Spirit Ashes simply cost FP, the Spirit Calling Bell, and of course the ashes of the spirit you want to summon.
Elden Ring spirit ashes guide
Spoilers Ahead: The earliest way to get the Spirit Calling Bell is to return to the Church of Elleh and there you’ll meet Renna, a young witch with a keen interest in your spectral steed Torrent. Renna will teach you the art of spirit summoning and give you two gifts, the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes (despite the name you summon three wolves, so technically they’re not lone wolves).
However if you’ve not taken the time to revisit the Church of Elleh and it seems Renna doesn’t appear, fear not! The Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes can be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. Check back here occasionally because they’ll sell other items you may have missed out on as well.
At Roundtable Hold you’ll also find Roderika who possesses a minor quest chain to become a Spirit Tuner, simply talk to her and Smithing Master Hewg enough times and navigate their dialogue options enough times and Roderika will join him in the hallway.
Rather than upgrade your weapons, Roderika will upgrade your Spirit Ashes. Upgrading Spirit Ashes requires Grave Glovewort instead of Smithing Stones, but is otherwise similar to upgrading weapons.
Now with the knowledge of how to summon your spirits, upgrade them, and get the Spirit Calling Bell, it’s time to go out there and let your disposable goons take aggro for you.
