Dune: Part Two has been delayed, Warner Bros. announced today as part of a scheduling update for some of its upcoming films. The movie has shifted a few weeks, moving from October 20, 2023 to November 17, 2023, according to Deadline.
Filming is expected to begin this fall in Budapest, with writer-director Denis Villeneuve coming back. The original–which won six Oscars–was released in 2021 during the pandemic both in theaters and on HBO Max, but the sequel is expected to play exclusively in theaters at the start.
Villenueve said he has nothing against streaming as an option, but he prefers for his films to release first in theaters. When people see a movie in a theater, they are “fully committed,” as opposed to watching a film at home and stopping to answer a phone call or walk the dog, he said.
In addition to returning cast members like Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, and Stellan Skarsgaard, the sequel will feature Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, and Austin Butler.
Warner Bros. also announced that a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong will be released on March 15, 2024. No details about this film have been divulged. It’s no surprise that a sequel is happening, of course, as the 2021 film made more than $470 million worldwide.
Looking further out, Warner Bros. is also making a sequel to The Batman and potentially more Harry Potter content for HBO Max.
