Your Next Favourite Twin-Stick Shooter – GameSpew

A new twin-stick shooter is incoming, and if its demo is anything to go by, you’re going to want to pay attention to it.

Slaycation Paradise, a clever play on words, takes you on a vacation like no other. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, you’re cast as a traveller looking to get away from their daily grind. But don’t expect to be laying back on a sunny beach, oh no. This holiday is all about slaying your way through monsters and mutants. Oh, and inflatable dolls. It’s not a game that takes itself very seriously.

It’s not a roguelike per se; if you die you will need to start your current level over again, but you’ll keep your weapons, upgrades and any currency you’ve earned. You’ll be very glad of that, because Slaycation Paradise is hard as nails. Fail to keep your wits about you, and you’re going to fail. Simple as that. Thankfully, its gameplay is so enjoyable that you’re going to want to jump straight back in.

This isn’t just a twin-stick shooter: there’s also some tower defence elements thrown into the mix. Sure, you’ll want to keep your gun at the ready, shooting your opponents as they shamble towards you. But by collecting scrap, you can quickly place a number of defences. Think barriers, unbreakable walls, turrets and more. When a wave of enemies descends on your location, you’ll be very grateful for the various turrets and whatnot you can place down.

Slaycation Paradise

There’s a variety of locations available in Slaycation Paradise, and we’ve only seen a small selection of them in the demo. Each location has a number of different levels, all with their own challenges to beat. Maybe you’ll need to slay 150 enemies and escape to tell the tale. Or maybe you’ll need to destroy a number of gelatinous enemy nests. Whatever task is at hand, though, the action boils down to the same thing: make your way through waves of enemies, using weapons, skills and defences.

It’s the sort of action that doesn’t get old quickly, though. We’ve jumped into the demo’s levels time and again, grinning happily as we lay waste to Slaycation Paradise‘s cast of weird and wonderful enemies. Even when we’ve failed – which we have, more than once – we’ve dusted ourselves off, jumping straight back in. By collecting blueprints and currency (which you’ll earn by killing enemies) you can unlock new weapons and defences, making future runs just that bit easier.

Slaycation Paradise

We’ve been impressed with what we’ve seen so far, then. And we think Slaycation Paradise might just be our next favourite twin-stick shooter. If you’re a fan of the genre, keep this on your radar.

Slaycation Paradise is coming soon to PC and consoles. You can give the demo a try for yourself on Steam now
