You’ll Be Able To Play ‘The Majority’ Of Dead Island 2’s Campaign In Co-op

As Dead Island 2 gears up for release next month, we had the opportunity to sit down with game director David Stenton to discuss the upcoming zombie-filled romp through the Hollywood Hills.

When asked how much of Dead Island 2 could be played in co-op, Stenton replied “You can play the overwhelming majority of the campaign as three players. We’re gonna cover co-op in a few weeks, so we gotta keep some powder dry, for, you know…”

With the majority of the game being available in co-op, it does raise the question of which parts of the game will be unavailable for cooperative play. This information will likely be revealed when Dambuster give us a more in-depth look at the feature.

A three-player game is curious when the standard has been four or two, almost ever since the release of the Xbox 360. When asked why Dambuster has opted for three-player co-op, Stenton answered “It’s mostly down to the playtests, three was a good number to focus on, you know keeping players together, focus on zombie slaying as a group.”

As the story in Dead Island 2 progresses, more of the map becomes available to you. It’s unknown if save states carry over between players, but at the very least, you and a couple of friends will be able to cause havoc on Venice Beach or in Hollywood.

Our own hands-on with Dead Island 2 left us less than impressed, with our previewer remarking “There’s dumb fun to be had with Dead Island 2, but my initial impressions lead me to believe that this would have benefitted from coming out when it was supposed to, eight years ago.”
