Since its reveal, Chinese developer Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong has wowed players. A Dark Souls-esque take on the Chinese novel Journey to the WestBlack Myth: Wukong immediately stood out thanks to its state-of-the-art graphics and dynamic animations, particularly for the game’s various boss monsters. Over two years have passed since that initial reveal, however, and the long hiatuses between gameplay trailers made a release date seem far off. Fortunately, though, Game Science just came out with an official release window for Black Myth: Wukong, slated for the summer of next year.

Game Science unveiled this release window in a surprising, amusing stop-motion short uploaded on January 15. Celebrating the Year of the Rabbit in China, the short follows a rabbit receiving a copy of Black Myth: Wukong and attempting to play it on its PC. After the PC breaks upon inserting the disc, it goes out to buy a more powerful PC and tries to run the game again. The rabbit seemingly succeeds only to find that it cannot play the game until 2042, leading it to throw the game outside of its window in frustration.

No, Black Myth: Wukong won’t come out in 2042

After showing some brief gameplay footage of Black Myth: Wukong, the camera zooms out to show two younger rabbits playing the title at home. The rabbit from before, now older, enters the room in a wheelchair and stares at the screen in awe. Then, the camera zooms in on the calendar in the background to show 2024, the actual release year for the game.

The end of the short reveals the summer 2024 release window for Black Myth: Wukong along with a message from the developers wishing people well during the Year of the Rabbit. Apparently, the higher-end hardware that the rabbit purchases in the short does not represent the actual specs required for the game.
