Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, a remake of the first Wizardry by Digital Eclipse, was announced and entered Steam and GOG Early Access. It didn’t need much time in this phase, as the team announces the final release date and confirms its arrival on consoles on the same day.

Wizardry Remake It Will Go On Sale Next Month

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord will be available on May 23 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It recreates in 3D the original Apple II game released by Sir-Tech in 1981, an innovative title for the genre: it was one of the first Dungeons & Dragons-style computer games, the first with colors, and it laid the foundations for RPGs with a party of characters, thus inspiring Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

During this time, the Early Access has received very positive reviews on Steam and GOG, and the feedback has helped improve various aspects. The developer reminds that under the new graphics lies the original code, but there are multiple adjustments that make it more comfortable in managing the group, navigation, spellcasting, and combat: Although the remake looks, sounds, and feels completely new, the Apple II game is under the hood, and you can even see its interface while playing.

New Features

  • Beautiful new graphics & animations for a game that, by necessity, only offered rudimentary visuals, now with the power of Unreal Engine.
  • User-selectable options that allow players to tailor the gameplay to their liking, including popular options from the console editions of the game. Players can also choose no new options at all to experience the original, more challenging gameplay.
  • An in-game Bestiary that records key information on enemies as they’re encountered and offers strategic advice on their strengths and weaknesses.
  • A lush musical soundtrack from composer Winifred Philips, including some fan-favorite themes from Wizardry history.
  • A controller-friendly interface, with a one-button shortcut for fast combat choices.
  • Fully localized into English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Italian, and German.

Create your own group of adventurers and enter the labyrinth on the order of the mad overlord Trebor in search of the amulet stolen by the evil wizard Werdna. Face challenging enemy groups, avoid hidden traps, and make your way through the dungeon as you prepare for the final battle: the showdown against Werdna himself, says the team.

A month ago, it received a significant update with improvements in graphics, new music, animations, various optimizations, and bug fixes.
