Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a high-octane, action-packed anime that hits the ground running. Since its release earlier this week, fans and critics have welcomed the show with open arms. However, unless you’re up to date with your Cyberpunk lore, you may not understand the exact period that Edgerunners takes place. So When Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Set in the timeline?
When Does Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Take Place Compared to Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set during the events of Cyberpunk: 2077. Players of 2077 will likely notice the locations, factions, and even characters from the game during the show’s runtime. The events in the show are cannon to the game. To be exact, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners takes place at the beginning or middle point of V’s journey through Night City. The appearance of a character – we won’t spoil it but you can check out the guide linked above if you want to know – from 2077 backups this assumption.
While the show Edgerunners focuses on its original cast of characters, your V is somewhere in the city, becoming a Night City legend. CD PROJEKT RED even introduced crossover content into 2077 with the 1.6 update to the game.
Another dead giveaway is that certain factions such; as Arasaka and Militech have not felt V’s impact yet from the main game. The writers of Edgerunners and 2077 crafted the narrative of Edgerunners to enhance the overall lore of Cyberpunk.
However, the success of Edgerunners could spark enough interest for a season 2. If this were to happen, the show would either pick up right where season 1 left off or jump the timeline forward by taking into account the actions of V. While this approach is interesting, the writers for season 2 would have to canonize one of the endings from Cyberpunk: 2077. And that would become tricky if the showrunners and game writers wanted to maintain consistency with the lore.
