Immortals of Aveum, a triple-A single-player first-person magical shooter, was announced with an accompanying trailer during the 2022 Game Awards ceremony.
Immortals of Aveum is set to be the debut release of Ascendant Studios, a triple-A studio based in California with veterans who worked on Dead Space and Call of Duty. Ascendant will be partnering with EA Originals. For those unfamiliar, Originals is the platform Electronic Arts uses to support independent game developers. This is despite Ascendant being a self-described “triple-A studio.”
“Immortals of Aveum is set in an original fantasy universe engulfed in magic, rife with conflict, and on the verge of oblivion” reads the description of the game’s trailer, viewable below.
The trailer doesn’t give too much away, but it’s clear that Ascendant is looking for a high-fidelity visceral feel. Showcased are magical explosions and the player character beginning to cast some kind of runic spell.
The game’s website provides more context on the universe, called Aveum. Magical users within Aveum use sigils to focus their innate power and these will be an “integral part of Immortals’ moment-to-moment shooter action and visceral, cinematic campaign experience.” From the sounds of it, magical sigils will be the driving force of Immortals of Aveum’s gameplay.
Bret Robbins, chief executive officer of Ascendant Studios provided the following statement regarding the reveal: “I founded Ascendant Studios to make original and epic games, and here we are, four years later, about to finish our first one. What started as a crazy, exciting idea has grown into a crazy, exciting triple-A game.”
Immortals of Aveum is being developed on Unreal Engine 5 and is planned to release at an unspecified time in 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
