Viewing figures for This Morning shot up by almost 100,000 in a week after Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary took on presenting duties following Phillip Schofield quitting the ITV magazine show, according to The Daily Mail.

This Morning has been at the centre of a media storm since rumours of a rift between Phillip and co-host Holly Willoughby emerged in recent weeks.

Phillip, who hosted the show for two decades, decided to quit This Morning and later admitted to having an affair with a younger male colleague last week.

The 61-year-old admitted he met the colleague when they were a teenager but insisted “nothing illegal happened” in a statement issued on Friday.

Former This Morning colleagues such as Eamonn Holmes have branded Phillip a “narcissist” and lambasted the ITV star in recent days.

Meanwhile, Alison and Dermot have been trying to weather the storm and keep the show running in Holly and Phillip’s absence.

Holly is currently off on annual leave, but she is scheduled to return to the This Morning sofa on Monday.

It has not been confirmed which presenter she will be hosting the programme with on her return yet.

However, viewing figures have surged during her and Phillip’s absence as a total of 797,000 viewers tuned in to watch Monday’s episode.

The show peaked at 996,000 viewers which was an increase on the previous week’s Monday episode which saw 703,000 people tune in with a peak of 918,000 watchers.

According to The Mirror, 644,000 people watched Phillip’s last show.

Alison and Dermot addressed Phillip’s controversy circulating across the news on Monday’s This Morning.

Dermot said: “We know we have been in the news at the moment. But just from both of us and the whole team here, the crew, the guys downstairs, we love making this show for all of you.”

Alison exclaimed: “We really do and that’s exactly what we’re gonna do – we’re continuing to do that.”

This Morning continues on weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITVX.
