Lord Of The Rings fans are calling on J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate to adapt the 1977 story collection, The Silmarillion.

Written by the creator of the Lord Of The Rings universe, Tolkien and published posthumously by his son, The Silmarillion has five parts.

The book tells stories of wars, supernatural powers and mythology, all set in and around Middle-earth, the setting of much of Tolkien’s writing.

Now, with several of Tolkien’s works having been adapted into film series, and the recent announcement of a new Lord Of The Rings movie coming in 2026, fans are taking to social media to plead for an adaptation of The Silmarillion.

One user responded on X to the new movie’s announcement, referencing fans asking the movie creators for The Silmarillion adaptation and being ignored: “‘Can we please have a Silmarillion movie?’ ‘Best we can do is Aragorn beating up Gollum for 3 hours.’”

Another wrote: “Everyone must drop whatever they’re planning to do with the LOTR franchise and convince Estate to make an… guess what I’m gonna say… AN ANIMATED ANTHOLOGY SERIES BASED ON THE SILMARILLION”.

One user expressed their disappointment at the announcement, referring to Andy Serkis’ directing of the film and return to play Gollum: “I really don’t know about this, but I know Andy is a capable director and very talented. I would have rather seen a proper Sauron origin story/Silmarillion adaptation.”

Another seemed disappointed in the premise behind the upcoming film, which is titled The Hunt For Gollum, writing: “Silmarillion literally waiting for an adaptation but noooo we suddenly have to gaf about gollum lore”.

One user questioned the reason behind there not being a Silmarillion adaptation, writing: “Why is it so hard to secure the rights of The Silmarillion? I am not interested in this.”

Contrary to some fans’ concerns, The Hunt For Gollum is reportedly set to “explore storylines yet to be told”, and is still only “in the early stages of script development”.

It is also set to closely involve the original film franchise’s director, writer and producer Peter Jackson.
