The Last of Us Part 2 Has “a New Version” in the Works, According to Composer

Gustavo Santaolalla – the composer of The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part 2, and the HBO adaptation of the Naughty Dog game – seems to have accidentally confirmed that an enhanced edition of The Last of Us Part 2 is in the works.

During a recent interview with Spanish YouTube channel Blender, Santaolalla was asked about his cameo in The Last of Us Part 2, where players can walk up to him (appearing as himself) in an early section of the game and watch him play music on his ronroco. In response to the question, Santaolalla accidentally mentioned a “new version” where players can “make [him] play certain themes”, before hurriedly adding that he can’t mention anything else.

A “director’s cut” of The Last of Us Part 2, so to speak, has been mentioned in leaks in the past, with journalist Tom Henderson having claimed in January last year that an enhanced edition of the game was in the works.

Of course, if an enhanced edition is indeed in development, it should be interesting to see whether it also releases for PC. Given Naughty Dog’s solidified commitment to internal PC development, and the fact that the game is over three years old now, one might imagine now would be the right time for a PC port.

The Last of Us Part 2 launched for the PS4 in June 2020, and had sold over 10 million units within two years. You can read our review of the game through here.
