The Game Awards’ Runtime Will Be “Significantly Shorter” For 2022

As reported by VGC, Geoff Keighley has confirmed in one of his recent Twitter Audio Space streams that this year’s The Game Awards showcase will be a bit shorter, which could probably mean we are going to witness a much more compact show that could handle the awards and announcements in a short amount of time. Of course, advertisements were one of the big reasons why the previous showcases were longer.

While Keighley didn’t reveal much about how they will manage to make this year’s showcase shorter, he said that he can share more details about the exact duration of the show when the rehearsal sessions are finished. “One thing we’re doing this year is we’re trying to make the show a little bit shorter,” said Keighley. “I won’t say anything officially until we’re through our rehearsals, but we think it’s going to be a significantly shorter show this year.”

It remains unknown whether a shorter show means that there would be fewer announcements and trailers compared to previous years, or it means the process of announcing winners and handing over the awards would happen faster. Previously, the winners in some fields were just being announced by the host, and no one from the developers would walk to the scene to receive the reward and have a quick chat with the community. So, we can probably expect to see more of this type of awarding process this year, if nothing else changes.

Thus far, some big titles have been confirmed to have a showcase at The Game Awards 2022, including Tekken 8, Dead Space Remake, and a new title from 505 Games. There are also strong rumors about some other anticipated titles to appear in the show, such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Diablo 4, Final Fantasy XVI, and a new Crash Bandicoot entry.

The nominees for this year’s The Game Awards were announced a few weeks earlier, with most fans believing the major GOTY contenders are Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok. Similar to previous years, fans can submit their vote in each field at the official website of The Game Awards.
