“It’s a particular challenge because you have a sort of duty, I guess, to the person you are portraying that you probably can’t fulfil.

“I have reflected on this quite a lot over the years and where I come to is actually you are trying to do something they can’t.

“You are representing a world, organising it in a way that people can think about it more clearly.

“So that is challenging, I wouldn’t say it’s the most challenging, I’m enjoying it.”

Expressing his excitement over the new season, he admitted he was anxious to see his character on the small screen.

He said: “It’s been a very long shoot. It’s always a pleasure to be involved in something that has such a huge platform.

“I feel very much like a passenger on that train, I haven’t seen any of it yet, I have shot most of my scenes so I’m anxious to see how it comes across.

“It’s been interesting to be on board that ship at such an epochal moment for the crown and to feel, reflect on that is interesting.

“I am really looking forward to seeing how it lands and how the stories link together with this present cultural moment when the Queen is close in everybody’s minds with what we have lived through in recent history.”

Earlier this year, Bertie and his co-star Lydia Leonard, who plays Tony’s wife Sherie, were seen filming at Winchester Cathedral.

They appeared to be filming scenes for a funeral as mourners dressed all in black were seen on set.

An actor in a bishop’s costume and a man in a military suit were also spotted at the cathedral.

The Crown season 6 will air on Netflix later this year.
