Super Mario producer reassures fans about Chris Pratt’s performance

Not many are particularly keen on Chris Pratt playing Mario on the big screen. At least, the announcement sure gave off that impression. Though his performance will likely be fine, according to producer and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.

During an interview with Deadline, Meledandri took the time to address criticism for Pratt’s casting despite the actor not being of Italian-American heritage.

“When people hear Chris Pratt’s performance, the criticism will evaporate, maybe not entirely — people love to voice opinions, as they should,” Meledandri said. “I’m not sure this is the smartest defense, but as a person who has Italian-American heritage, I feel I can make that decision without worrying about offending Italians or Italian-Americans. I think we’re going to be just fine.”

In another interview with Variety, Meledandri explained why Illumination chose Pratt for the starring role.

“Chris was cast because we felt he could give a great performance as Mario. And now that we’ve done about 15 recording sessions, and the movie is three-quarters done, I sit here and say that I love his performance as Mario,” Meledandri said. “I think we’re gonna be just fine. Especially because (Pratt) he’s given such a strong performance.”

The Super Mario movie was recently delayed to spring of next year.
