Sue Barker fights back tears on BBC Breakfast ‘You’re going to get me going’ | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt were joined by the tennis ace on the latest instalment of BBC Breakfast. The former Question of Sport host fought back tears as she reflected on her career and discussed her “very emotional” appearance at Wimbledon earlier this year. 

Naga and Charlie took Sue by surprise when they showed her a touching montage with clips from her tennis and television career.

After looking back at the reel, Sue wiped her eyes and told the presenters: “You’re going to get me going again.”

Naga sympathetically said: “I was about to ask you if you’ve had time to breathe and just let those emotions go, but obviously not.”

Sue explained: “No, this year’s Wimbledon absolutely blew me away, everything that happened. I knew it was going to be emotional but I never imagined just got emotional that centenary day would be.”

The French Open winner was being interviewed on BBC Breakfast to discuss her autobiography which she described as “very emotional”. 

The 66-year-old said she got tearful revisiting her junior days as a young tennis player when her father used to drop her off at her local court.

She admitted she did not realise the sacrifices her parents and tennis coach made for her and wondered if she thanked them enough. 

“At the time you are just so swept up in your dreams that you don’t really think about it at the time,” she confessed. 

“For everyone to say such nice things, it was a sendoff which I could not have ever imagined, it was so far beyond watch I imagined, it was magical.” 

Naga told the tennis star: “Can I just say it was well deserved.” 

Elsewhere in the interview, Sue shared anecdotes about her time as a Grand Slam Champion.

Naga also asked if Sue had ever lost her “delight” in the sport when she moved on to her broadcasting career.
