Starfield is a Bethesda game so it’s going to include lock picking, but players in Starfield are learning really quickly that master locks aren’t worth it.

The lock picking puzzle in Starfield isn’t an easy or quick one so going through a master lock isn’t the most fun thing to do. Add to that how you need to have Security Rank 3 (which takes a long time to get unless you’re using console command cheat codes) to even unlock the ability to attempt lock picking a master lock. Worst yet, there’s always little to no loot behind master locks in Starfield.

In my own experience with lock picking in Starfield. I’ve found that there is a significant jump from rewards locked behind novice and advanced locks. However, there somehow seems to be a decrease in quality (and quantity) of rewards behind master and expert locks in Starfield.

The best example of master locks not containing any good loot, or any loot at all, is found in Reddit user antonio_rivera’s video. In it, they unlock their first master lock ever and are greeted with a few extremely common items in a First Aid box and nothing else. See for yourself.

In my experience, master locks take several minutes to figure out and solve which takes you away from enjoying the game. While the lock picking mini-game is fun in short bursts, it’s absolutely not worth doing if there isn’t a decent reward in the end.

Starfield players now joke in Reddit threads that master locks only serve as warning signs to stay away because there’s no good loot behind them. It’s unfortunate that master locks don’t contain some of the best loot in the game and hopefully, Bethesda sees this and works to fix it. In the meantime, you can find some of the best weapons and armor and get a free ship by completing this side quest.
