Slay the Princess: Beast walkthrough

The Beast is the chapter of Slay the Princess with the most intricate puzzle of choices to explore. Here we’re going to cover the entirety of the Slay the Princess Beast walkthrough.

Facing down the Princess’ feral anger leaves you with a Princess more animal than humanoid. Is there any way to survive the beast, or is she doomed to hunt you down?

Slay the Princess Beast full guide: Chapter one

The Beast route is accomplished by betraying the Princess and being overwhelmed by her anger. This means you have to begin without the knife. With that, do one of the following:

  • Try to free her, but attack her while she’s biting into her arm, or when the Narrator first tries to force you to attack her. Then click ‘give up’ in the ensuing fight.
  • Talk to her, but then go back upstairs for the knife. When you come back down, be sure to shut the door. You can pick any dialogue option or investigate the arm. Venturing into the shadows, waiting, or giving up when she attacks you after investigating the arm all lead to the Beast.

Either of these lead to the Beast.

Chapter two: The Beast walkthrough

You’ll meet the Beast in a jungle version of the cabin. Every action you take in this route matters. Depending on these actions, here are all the potential outcomes:

  • Get devoured by her: Standing still or trying any dialogue option when you first come down, as well as fleeing at any given point allowed, leads to her devouring you. This leads to The Wild unless you do one of the options below.
  • Be mauled to death: Playing dead, attacking her back with the knife when the opportunity arises, or dodging until you can’t dodge any more all lead to this outcome, leading to The Den.
  • Kill her while being devoured: If you have the knife, you can successfully kill her from inside if you attack every round instead of using dialogue options. You’ll kill her, leading to The Wild.
  • Free her while being devoured: You can also choose to pick the dialogue option to give up and let her walk out of the cabin with you. This is the only way to get The Shifting Mound to claim The Beast.

If you’ve already done The Wild via The Witch, there’s an achievement for not dodging when you first come down. As you’re not allowed to get devoured again, you’ll automatically dodge.

Chapter three: The Wild or the Den

If you get The Wild, there’s only one choice that matter in this route: choosing to bury the hatred in your heart or gaze into it. If you gaze into it, you’ll be presented with a Princess fused to the tree, aka The Wounded Wild. Whether you kill her or not, The Shifting Mound claims her. Otherwise, burying the hatred leads to a fixed outcome of glancing beyond the game’s world. The Shifting Mound claims this Princess as a different variant.

If you instead get The Den, your dialogue options to The Princess won’t yield a response. Your options are instead to either step into the shadows to fight, or step into the shadows to try and lure her out. If you fight her, The Shifting Mound claims her before she can maul you again. If you lure her out, you’ll flee the den and she’ll get stuck. With the knife your option is to talk it out or slay her, but either option leads to The Shifting Mound claiming her.

In total, the Beast route has four possible Princess vessels to give to the Shifting Mound. As two are tied to The Wild, you’ll need to replay this route a few times to give all of them.

Beyond that, you never did get to Slay the Beast, or even outrun her. But you have seen another side to the Princess, one very different from the other routes. That about covers the Slay the Princess: Beast walkthrough.
