Facing this familiar NPC who has been helping and teaching you in Roundtable Hold can be emotionally disturbing. However, as a boss fight, although Sir Gideon has some tricks up his sleeves, this isn’t as daunting as some of the others you’ve faced.

In this Elden Ring guide, we’ll give you a rundown on how to prepare and how to beat Sir Gideon Ofnir.

The Sir Gideon Ofnir boss fight becomes available only after you have progressed through the story and finished the Crumbling Farum Azula area to unlock the Ashen Capital. Sir Gideon Ofnir will be waiting for you in one of the first rooms in the new area. For more details on how to find it, check our walkthrough of Lyndell, Ashen Capital.

Sir Gideon Ofnir weaknesses and how to prepare

While Sir Gideon Ofnir is not a major boss, he is strong enough to kill you with a couple of hits from his powerful magic spells. But if you have defeated Maliketh, your character should already be at level 125 or higher, which is more than enough to face Gideon.

Regardless of how strong his attacks are, Gideon is susceptible to having his stance broken, which also cancels any casting he might be performing. Bleeding and Lightning damage work pretty well against him too.

Because Sir Gideon has access to both incantations and sorceries, he only causes magic damage. So, running a set with high magic resistance is a solid strategy for this fight. The best armor in terms of magic resistance is the Lusat’s armor set, but there are other options, such as the Banished Knight set.

You can’t summon specific NPCs to help you in this fight, but Spirit Ashes are available and you should use them.

Sir Gideon Ofnir’s spell rotation changes if you have defeated any or all of the following bosses: Mohg, Lord of Blood; Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy; and Malenia, Blade of Miquella. Because these are all optional bosses, you might want to go after them after defeating Gideon so you don’t have to deal with weaker — but still annoying — versions of their signature spells.

How to beat Sir Gideon Ofnir in Elden Ring

Sir Gideon Ofnir is one of the last bosses you fight in Elden Ring, but this is a single-phase encounter and it doesn’t require complex strategies or extensive memorization.

To defeat Sir Gideon Ofnir, you’ll need to focus on two things. First, attack him all the time. He is a caster, so melee builds have the upper hand here, but make sure to always attack or cast an ability, not letting him start casting one of his spells.

The second key element of the strategy are your Spirit Ashes. One of the most difficult aspects of the fight is to escape some of Gideon’s quick blue spells that he shoots at you. But, if your Spirit Ashes draw his attention, that’s not something you need to worry about. Give priority to Spirit Ashes that summon more than one character.

Sir Gideon Ofnir main strategy

Since Gideon only has one phase, you only need to focus on one main strategy and apply it throughout the fight.

As mentioned, you want to be really aggressive in not giving Gideon time to breathe. If you’re about to fight him for the first time, once you get into the room, Sir Gideon Ofnir starts a speech. You can exploit this since you can attack him while he prattles on. Get to his back and hit him to start pressuring him. He won’t utter the speech a second time if you die, so don’t waste this chance.

If you missed the chance, right as the fight starts, summon the Spirit Ashes. Wait until his attention is drawn by the spirits, then run toward him to close the gap and start attacking.

Try not to run out of stamina when close to Gideon or he will have enough time to get some distance and cast a spell.

Sir Gideon Ofnir spell list

Sir Gideon uses a rotation of six spells, although he uses some more often than others. Learning what each of them does is fundamental in case he escapes from you or your spirits. They are as follows:

  • Comet Azur
  • Comet
  • Carian Phalanx
  • Rings of Light
  • Law of Causality
  • Signature spell from optional bosses

Here’s how to survive each of them.

Comet Azur is a charging beam attack which you should wait to close to when he is finishing casting the spell to dodge it. Using this ability forces Gideon to stay locked in animation for a period, which is a great opportunity to attack him.

On the other hand, the Comet spell is a quick magic shot that is always used in sequences of three to four. Rolling sideways in the right moment is the best way to avoid them.

Gideon might cast the Carian Phalanx sorcery, which creates magical swords around him that, after some time, fly in your direction and are followed up by a sequence of comets. This is a difficult combination to escape, so try to time your rolls or put your shield up. If he is only using the magical swords, dodging them is a bit smoother, since they fly toward the same point. Once you get used to their timing, bait them to one location and roll away from them.

When Gideon uses Rings of Light, he’ll throw three large discs of light. After they reach a certain distance, go back to him. Because this is a frontal attack with a short charge, it’s possible to quickly respond to it. However, the hitbox is pretty weird, so the best option is to roll toward Gideon and get to his back, staying on the opposite side of where the discs are.

The other incantation Gideon has up his sleeves is the Law of Causality. After moving his arms, he gains a magical aura that, as he receives damage, charges up to the point it causes an explosion around him. The glowing in his body getting stronger as the incantation is near triggering the explosion, so use that to judge when to avoid him.

Now, if you have defeated one or all the three optional bosses aforementioned — Malenia, Mohg, and Rykard — before this battle, then Gideon will use their signature spells. Melania’s Scarlet Aeonia is similar to the original but weaker. Get some distance from where he is and wait a little or you will be afflicted by rot. Rykard’s Rancor sends a flying skull that follows you. While they can be a bit annoying, they are only a problem if you’re too close to Gideon. Now, when he casts Mohg’s Bloodboon, the safest strategy is to roll backwards and get far from him.

With that done, it’s time to continue exploring Leyndell, Ashen Capital and take on the next bosses, Godfrey, First Elden Lord/Hoarah Loux.
