Rumour: Elden Ring Mobile Game in Development

While we wait for the expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, details of a possible mobile version of Elden Ring have appeared online. According to a report by Reuters, Tencent is working on bringing the souls game to mobile. The title will get a revamp, transforming into something similar to Genshin Impact‘s free to play model, supporting in-app purchases. Even uttering those words it’s hard to wrap your head around the idea of this massive hit game becoming a mobile title, let alone with a free-to-play model.

But recently Tencent has axed a similar large franchise to mobile game in December which was based on NieR. They are in search of the next major game which they can rival the likes of Genshin Impact by the Hoyaverse developer according to Reuter’s sources.

Tencent has in the past brought such major titles as PUBG Mobile to fruition, which continues to deliver strong revenue. But they are still on the lookout for their next major hit. According to the article, the progress of development is “slow”. It could be some years until we see anything.

Under the Shadow of the Erdtree

Fans are still awaiting the next chapter of Elden Ring, the DLC Shadow of the Erdtree which has yet to make an appearance this year. No announcement have been made, but trickles of rumours have arisen with a possible announcement even this month. More backend entries on Steam have implied something is coming but both FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have remained rather silent on the matter.

While an Elden Ring mobile game would be plausible, the concept seems at odds with the game’s main audience. Tencent in 2022 had acquired roughly one-third of FromSoftware, owning 16.25% of their shares. Sony still owns 14.09%, with the rest being owned by From’s parent company Kadokawa Corp. Tencent hadn’t mentioned in the past or at the time of the investment anything about creating a mobile game based on the IP.

Elden Ring has already gone on to sell more than 20 million copies worldwide, making it one of the biggest games to release in 2022. Bringing such a massively successful game to such a small screen seems like a strange concept, but stranger things have happened. Titles such as the Resident Evil 4 Remake and Death Stranding have made their way to iPhones. However, the mention of a completely different monetisation structure is very different to the AAA experience and pricing that Elden Ring offers.
