Recent indications hint that Bandai Namco and FromSoftware might be gearing up to unveil the much-anticipated expansion of Elden Ring in the near future.

Rumour: Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree Launching February

The Steam data tracker website, SteamDB, has recently listed “Unknown App 2778580” under the DLC section for Elden Ring, marking its first update for 15 months. This leads some to believe Elden Ring’s first major expansion Shadow of the Erdtree is coming sooner than you’d think.

Often when there is a change in the backend of a Steam listing, it means there could be something coming soon. As the listing is on the downloadable content page, this could be referring to Elden Ring’s highly anticipated expansion Shadow of the Erdtree.

In the Shadow of the Erdtree

This development has sparked conversation on whether FromSoftware will be ready to unveil the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion in alignment with the game’s second anniversary next month.

Elden Ring, launched on February 25, 2022, for platforms including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, was among the top-selling games of the year. A few days before the one-year anniversary of the launch of the game, Bandai Namco revealed the game has already sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Adding fuel to the fire, Shadow of the Erdtree was announced just three days after the game’s first birthday, which could also mean it would be the launch date for the DLC.

This isn’t the first indication, in December there was an Elden Ring-themed controller from Thrustmaster leak which indicated a February launch alongside the DLC. The listing suggested this controller would be released to celebrate the arrival of the long awaited expansion but didn’t share any other details apart from a possible February release window. Of course, the page was quickly taken down, which could either be an indication of sharing too early or mistaken details. Images were also were quickly scrubbed, but that doesn’t tell us whether it was false info or leaked. This doesn’t solidify an actual release date and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Straight From the Torrent’s Mouth

So far the only official word on the progress of the development of the expansion was last month when the Elden Ring producer Yasuhiro Kitao updated fans saying it was “going well” in a Japanese publication Game Watch. Back in November, the parent company Kadokawa Corporation also gave a small update saying Shadow of the Erdtree is “proceeding smoothly”.

However, in early December, Yasuhiro Kitao also shared a similar sentiment mentioning in an interview at the PS Partner Awards 2023, that the DLC is “still some way off” but still progressing well. This would contradict the current rumours. Although when the Shadow of the Erdtree was originally announced it was done with little fanfare, almost in the shadows through a post online and not through a major game show or showcase. Could Kitao be throwing a curveball to curb expectations in case the release is delayed?

FromSoft are not one to over-promise and is careful in how they share updates/news. That’s very evident as we’re almost a year out from the initial reveal of Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree with no new artwork or even trailer. The last DLC update was the PVP arena-based DLC called the Colosseum adding up to 6 player matches.

What’s in the Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion?

We already made our prediction last year that the Elden Ring DLC would be dropping around February or March 2024.

What exactly is in the expansion is currently unknown but could potentially have further content such as new weapons, armor, bosses, enemies and even a location. A brand new expansion could mean a further area to explore and expect plenty more lore to hit. None of this is confirmed of course and we’ll have to wait for From to give us the details as we draw closer to its launch. Since the title focuses on the Erdtree’s shadow, it sounds like there is a lot of death in its wake.

Elden Ring has already had made a number of major milestones which include celebrating its first major anniversary in Stockholm. The one-year mark was a great as a time as any to make a big announcement of Erdtree size proportions. This announcement was fantastic news, and of course we’ll be filling up our wiki with all the latest info as it releases.

Award Winning

The game has done tremendously well, with now reaching over 20 million units sold just a year after its launch of the game. It also won a number of awards, piling up numerous accolades including our own Game of the Year 2022 which is probably no surprise. Elden Ring also stacked up a number of trophies at TGA 2022 including Best Art Direction, Best Game Direction, Best RPG and GOTY. It also gained a Nebula award for Best Game Writing earlier last year.
