Resident Evil 4 Will Receive Free Mercenaries DLC In April

Resident Evil 4 Remake’s previously announced The Mercenaries DLC mode now has an early April release date.

The date for the free Resident Evil 4 Remake DLC was announced in the launch trailer for the game and will be released in just a couple of weeks, on April 7th, although there aren’t many details about the mode beyond that. The promotional image only shows Leon facing off against Ganado in the village area, so we don’t have any indication of which other characters will be playable.

The Mercenaries in the 2005 original featured a total of five playable characters – Leon, Ada, Jack Krauser, Albert Wesker, and HUNK – along with four stages, and was unlocked after finishing the main game. It’s unknown whether or not this will also be the case with the remake’s iteration of the mode.

The Mercenaries has had somewhat of a longstanding legacy in the franchise, first appearing in 1999’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It later returned in the original Resident Evil 4, and was included in every subsequent game up until Resident Evil 6, and was also released as a standalone game on the 3DS handheld in 2011. Despite being absent in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and the remakes of 2 and 3, the mode returned in Resident Evil Village and later received additional characters as part of the Gold Edition for the game.

It’s also been rumored that Resident Evil 4 Remake will be getting paid DLC in the form of Separate Ways, which first appeared in the PlayStation 2 re-release of the game in 2005. Although nothing has been confirmed by Capcom, Resident Evil insider and enthusiast Dusk Golem posted on their Twitter account that Separate Ways would be a “more extensive” paid DLC. Separate Ways had players controlling Ada Wong during the events of Resident Evil 4 through her perspective, showing a different angle to the story and providing more exposition regarding her character.

DualShockers awarded Resident Evil 4 Remake with a 7 out of 10 score, lamenting that despite its competency as an action-horror title it doesn’t quite stack up to the legacy of the original.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
