Resident Evil 4 VR mode gets December release date for PSVR 2

The virtual reality modes for Capcom’s recent Resident Evil games are some of the very best VR horror experiences out there — and we’ll soon be able to add the remake of perhaps the greatest Resident Evil game of all time to that list. Capcom has announced that the VR mode for the remake of Resident Evil 4 will be released for PlayStation VR 2 in a week’s time, on Dec. 8.

This might well be the biggest game yet for Sony’s VR headset, which was released earlier this year. Published as a free update to the PlayStation 5 version of Resident Evil 4, the VR mode makes the main story of the game playable in virtual reality — and from a first-person perspective, a first for any official version of the 2005 classic. 3D audio and haptic feedback in the Sense controllers, which has been customized to each individual weapon, will increase the immersion even further. “I’m actually jealous of anyone who gets to experience the game this way for the first time!” commented producer Masato Kumazawa.

If you don’t already own Resident Evil 4 for PS5 and want to sample the scares first, there’ll be a free, stand-alone demo of VR Mode released for PSVR 2 owners to try on the same day.

The original PlayStation VR launched with support for Resident Evil 7, while PSVR 2 had Resident Evil Village available from day one, and the latter remains one of the very best games for the headset. Resident Evil 4, for its part, is currently clawing its way to the upper reaches of many 2023 best-of-the-year lists, despite being a remake of an 18-year-old game, and up against some of the strongest competition in recent memory. It’s nominated for three Game Awards, including Game of the Year.
