Requiem Trailer Shows Off Protagonists’ Dark Side

PlayStation has released another trailer, viewable below, for the highly anticipated stealth-action title, A Plague Tale: Requiem.

Labelled as a story trailer, it provides more cutscene snippets that reference the game’s main plot and themes. We know that Hugo is afflicted with his curse and that he’s seeing an island in his visions, which he believes to hold the cure to his affliction. Naturally, this becomes the destination for the protagonists.

Game director Kevin Choteau had previously stated one of the game’s themes to be the concept of sacrificing morality for survival, and that the characters will explore how much they are willing to let the darkness within them. This trailer showcases the first in-game examples of that, if only in the form of short teases. Some are quite subtle, and perhaps imply more than anything that Amicia is tougher than she once was. She states how her head wound is a reminder she should kill someone, or someone else tells her she needs to “be nice” when arriving in a new land.

Some clips are much more direct. Amicia looks down at her hand and asks, “what is wrong with me?” Later, a voice line directed at Amicia says, “This world hurts, and it keeps hurting, and you want to hurt it back, but it’s a fight you can’t win.” It’s clear that the obstacles she’ll face, and the hardships the world will put her through are going to drive her to violent acts that go much beyond what’s seen in the first game, A Plague Tale: Innocence.

Hugo will face similar struggles, though with a certain key difference; his powers. One of the more disturbing moments in this trailer is towards the end, where the younger sibling is crouched down staring at a wave of rats screaming at his enemies to die, with Amicia trying to pull him back saying, “they are dead.” This is clearly him using his power, as detailed in prior showcases, which allows him to control the rat hordes and ravage his enemies. Choteau had stated how controlling such power could result in a “vicious pleasure” for Hugo, and now we see it in action.

A Plague Tale: Requiem releases for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch (Cloud Version), on October 18, 2022.
