Last month, First Second Books released Hungry Ghost. The young adult graphic novel from cartoonist Victoria Ying follows Valerie Chu, a young woman struggling with an eating disorder and a toxic relationship with her mother. Today The Beat is pleased to offer a preview of the graphic novel, which finds Valerie trying to enjoy a trip to Paris in spite of her disorder.

Here’s how First Second describes Hungry Ghost:

Valerie Chu is quiet, studious, and above all, thin. No one, not even her best friend, Jordan, knows that she has been bingeing and purging for years. But when tragedy strikes, Val finds herself reassessing her priorities, her choices, and her body. The path to happiness may lead her away from her hometown and her mother’s toxic projections—but first she will have to find the strength to seek help.

Hungry Ghost is the latest graphic novel from animator and cartoonist Victoria Ying, and her first book from First Second. Other comics work written and illustrated by Ying includes City of Secrets, City of Illusion, and the forthcoming Marvel graphic novel Shang Chi and the Quest for Immortality. Ying also illustrated DC’s young reader graphic novels Diana, Princess of the Amazons and Diana and Nubia, Princesses of the Amazons, written by Shannon Hale & Dean Hale.
