Fall is upon us, and with college football and the NFL set to return in just a few weeks, it also means that some of the biggest video games of the year are set to release ahead of the holiday season.

Xbox and PC gamers have been looking forward to Bethesda’s Starfield for years, the studio’s first new IP in the last 25 years. September will also deliver new NBA and soccer games for sports fans, and the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise.

But which game is truly the biggest release of the month? Check out our rankings below.

Baldur’s Gate 3 gets the nod over Starfield as the No. 1 release of September because we already know it’s a gem. The rich, story-driven RPG has been wowing players over on PC since its initial release in August, and it’s a must-play for fans of RPGs or fantasy stories.

The latest massive RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, Starfield has been one of the most anticipated releases of 2023 – and if Bethesda can successfully capture the magic of Skyrim or Fallout in space, this could be a game of the year contender.

Mortal Kombat is rebooting itself again, this time reimagining the very first game in the series. It’s a glorious time for fighting game fans with MK1 releasing, Street Fighter 6 already out, and Tekken 8 on the horizon.

Payday 2 was a huge hit, and Payday 3 could be the co-op heist game all your friends want to play this fall.

Will 7-foot-5 Victor Wembanyama be the defensive equivalent of Madden NFL 2004 Michael Vick, blocking every shot in his path? Only time will tell.

This is the follow up to My Time at Portia, an excellent game from 2019. If you liked Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, this could become your new jam.

The first entry since EA Sports split with FIFA, EA Sports FC is making some big changes to the formula, such as adding women’s players to the Ultimate Team pool.

A stellar adaptation of the massively popular RPG tabletop game, Gloomhaven has been playable on PC for a while and received glittering reviews.

Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most polarizing games of 2020 and CD Projekt Red has been working to optimize the game over the last two years. If you gave up or waited on Cyberpunk around launch, it may be a good time to dive back into Night City with Phantom Liberty, a new “spy-thriller expansion,”

If you need another Forza Horizon-style fix, The Crew Motorfest could be a good option.

Super Bomberman R was a great local multiplayer and family title, and the sequel is adding a bunch of new content.

A Souls-like that seems to be taking a lot of inspiration from Bloodborne, if this trailer is any indication.
