R-Type series’s first PlayStation 5 debut
NIS America has revealed the western release dates for the highly anticipated R-Type Final 3 Evolved on PlayStation 5. The game will be available in North America on April 25th and in Europe on April 28th, one month after its Japanese release date of March 23rd. To celebrate the announcement, NIS America has released a new trailer showcasing the game’s features on PS5.
R-Type Final is a horizontal shooter video game that was first released for the PlayStation 2 in 2007. It received a direct sequel called R-Type Final 2 in 2021 after a successful crowdfunding campaign, and this sequel is actually what players will be getting soon. R-Type Final 3 Evolved is not a new game, but a full-fledged 9th Gen upgrade for R-Type Final 2, and if players already own the latter, they will get the upgrade at no extra cost.
R-Type Final 3 Evolved will feature 3D graphics and updated gameplay features, such as a performance-based difficulty system and customizable ships. The “Force” mechanic is also making a comeback as a stable of the R-Type series, which is a fancy name for the game’s beam weapons and their different laser properties. It’s also confirmed that the PS5 version will include seven exclusive stages designed by series creator Kazuma Kujo himself, and these stages – like the classic ones – will pit you against enemies that evolve based on your skill level.
It is that customizable difficulty based on each player’s individual experience that makes this series standout, and players will be happy to know that It’s not just the base game that’s getting the new-gen treatment. All the first Stage Pass DLC content, the update 2.0.0 ships, and even the six-player multiplayer mode from R-Type Final 2 will be completly rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. Players will have a blast customizing every component of their ships and competing with other players on a global scale in worldwide leaderboards.
R-Type Final 3 Evolved will support English and Japanese voice acting at launch. There are also plans to add VR to the ship launch sequences and an online space where players can play mini-games and share strategies. In addition to the base game, the special edition will include a 2-disc “Starfighter” soundtrack and an R-9A keychain, while the deluxe edition will include a 1-disc “Discovery” soundtrack and a softcover artbook.
