The man who heads PlayStation Productions and product at PlayStation Studios believes that the future of gaming will be about “immersive narratives.” In fact, Asad Qizilbash thinks developers will focus on emotional storytelling over visual fidelity in the future.

Spotted by VGC, Sony posted an interview with Qizilbash that discussed how the video game medium might change over the next 10 years. For creators, the PlayStation executive believes they’ll “be able to just create so much more emotion in the stories. The focus is going to shift from graphics or visuals to immersive narratives that resonate long after the controller is set down.”

Qizilbash is also bullish on AI and how that will affect the medium going forward. “Advancements in AI will create more personalized experiences and meaningful stories for consumers,” he said. “For instance, NPCs in games could interact with players based on their actions, making it feel more personal.”

Sony also showed off what a PlayStation controller could look like in 2034. The device features a floating screen thanks to futuristic VR glasses. However, it’s notable the controller doesn’t offer a D-pad or even traditional buttons.

Meanwhile, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann teased the studio’s next game and also promoted AI for gaming’s future. As for the mysterious title from Naughty Dog, Druckmann thinks it could “redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming.”

In the more near-future, Sony could be launching an upgraded PS5. That’s because leaked specs for the PS5 Pro hit the internet earlier this year, though there’s still no official announcement about the hardware.
