Return to the Age of Wonders this spring.

Paradox Interactive and Triumph Studios have announced Age of Wonders 4 with a 40 minute-long announcement show. The next mainline entry in the acclaimed 4X strategy series will arrive on May 2.

According to the Community Developer Jordi Engel, Age of Wonders 4 has been in development since the last title in the series, Age of Wonders: Planetfall, made its debut back in 2019. The video shows the faction creation interface of the new 4X strategy title, which welcomes the player with a wide array of faction aspects including race, culture, social traits, magic tomes, ruler’s origin and more.

Similar to its predecessors, Age of Wonders 4 combines strategy elements with a turn-based gameplay formula. The next chapter in the Age of Wonders series also introduces a strategy RPG system in which choices and consequences will open up “new possibilities and tactical advantages.” Triumph states that this creates a “deep, multilayered strategy” and allows players to explore their magical arsenal while expanding their borders with new tactics in each turn.

Moreover, the new 4X strategy title is also expected to come with a high level of replayability thanks to the new event system. Age of Wonders 4 will challenge the player with procedurally generated events and world combinations that come with their own unique conditions. The game’s map will be shaped by the decisions made throughout the campaign as well.

Based on the title’s official website, the story in Age of Wonders 4 does not end with certain victory or defeat conditions that you would normally see in similar strategy games. The sequel encourages players to take part in a bigger story in which they can face their creations “as potential rivals or allies in subsequent games,” allowing them to weave a bigger saga that does not end with a single faction. There is also good news for those who like to delve into modding endeavors, because Age of Wonders 4 will be “more moddable and open-ended than ever,” according to the game’s official description.

The new chapter in the Age of Wonders series will land on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on May 2.
