Henry Cavill’s departure from the series The Witcher was something we all knew was coming, but now it feels much more real. Netflix has shared the first trailer of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, marking one of the most controversial casting changes in recent years.

Liam Hemsworth Already Looks Like Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher

The production is currently filming in the United Kingdom for what will be the fourth season of the streaming platform’s project. Lauren S. Hissrich, the show’s showrunner, explained to Entertainment Weekly how the work has been so far.

“His look has been in development for over a year, so it’s exciting to finally share an official preview (…) The cast and crew alike have been impressed by the passion, energy, and embodiment that Liam has brought to the character from day one — scruffy beard, iconic scar, and all!”

The actor from The Hunger Games and Independence Day: Resurgence will take on the role after Cavill’s departure was confirmed in 2022. Cavill is now focused on developing the Warhammer 40,000 franchise for Amazon. Hemsworth’s co-stars include Freya Allan as Princess Cirilla, Anya Chalotra as the sorceress Yennefer, and Joey Batey, who plays the bard Jaskier.

There has been no dispute between the two actors, as Hemsworth stated at the time, “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing over the reins to me (…) I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character.” Nevertheless, the fourth and fifth seasons seem to be focusing more on Ciri.

Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake are the novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski that will be adapted in the upcoming episodes. For now, we remain without a release date on Netflix.
