Following the huge success of Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog says it is “done” with the series.
Naughty Dog is “done” with the Uncharted series, according to the studio’s co-president Neil Druckmann. In a new interview with BuzzFeed, Druckmann said that following the success of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, the studio is “done” and “moving on” from the franchise.
Druckmann was also asked about the possibility of The Last Of Us: Part III, given the huge success of the previous two entries and the resurgence in sales following the release of HBO’s The Last Of Us.
In response, Druckmann said “with The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue it or not. Our process is the same thing we did when we did Part 2, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — just like the first and second game did — then we will tell that story. If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.”
The co-president of Naughty Dog also noted that the studio is very privileged to be under the wing of Sony, saying that the publisher has “supported us every step of the way to follow our passions — meaning that just because something is successful, people think there’s all this pressure and we have to make a sequel. That’s not the case.”
Although Druckmann states that Naughty Dog is completely done with Uncharted, there were reports late last year that suggested Naughty Dog was working in collaboration with a newly found Sony studio on a new game in a “beloved franchise”. This doesn’t necessarily confirm that a new Uncharted game is in the works, but it’s certainly a possibility that Sony has handed the realms off to another studio, with Naughty Dog simply offering a helping hand.
As for the studio’s next title, Naughty Dog have already confirmed that a multiplayer The Last Of Us game is in the works. Druckmann briefly discussed the upcoming release, saying “We’ve been pretty open that the next Last of Us game is going to be this multiplayer experience, where you’ll be able to enter the world of The Last of Us with your friend and get to experience the tension and the brutality of that world — and a brand new story and cast of characters that live in another city that we haven’t seen yet in the world of The Last of Us.”
