Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 frame rate resolution

A new video from Digital Foundry explores the technical side of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, including frame rate and resolution. Unfortunately, a number of issues are present throughout the different games.

Here’s the full rundown:

Metal Gear Solid

– Essentially the same across all planforms since it takes the straight emulation approach
– M2 handled Metal Gear Solid 1
– Many of the original quirks preserved
– Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 has same base resolution of the original game’s 240p
– Texture maps wobble in effect as you move the camera
– Frame rate caps at 30 FPS with hard drops to 20 FPS and under (usually in the first-person view)
– European version caps to 25 FPS
– Some audio issues

Metal Gear Solid 2

– MGS2 and 3 are basically the same as the HD Collection versions from 2011 for PS3/Xbox 360
– One positive is that delay on the codec dialogue has been reduced
– Native 720p resolution
– Anti-aliasing is worst on Switch (or lack there of)
– Seemingly no texture filtering on Switch
– 30 FPS frame rate cap for Metal Gear Solid 2 in Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1
– This negatively impacts motion blur effect
– Uneven frame pacing
– Frame rate drops particularly in cutscenes
– Frame rate similar in portable mode

Metal Gear Solid 3

– Anti-aliasing better on Switch compared to MGS2
– Texture filtering is in place here
– 30 FPS cap
