Marvel’s New Human Torch Joseph Quinn Hopes He Can Live Up To Chris Evans’ Performance

The three Fantastic Four films–four if you count the infamous Roger Corman spectacle–haven’t been the most memorable comic book movies. Yeah, the first two starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, and Chris Evans made some money, but Alba getting a Razzie nomination for Sue Storm wasn’t exactly promising. The follow-up reboot in 2015 with Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan sealed the deal.

Marvel Studios teased Fantastic Four finally heading over to the Juggernaut during the San Diego Comic-Con panel back in 2019, with the cast finally announced back in February. Joseph Quinn, who’s taking over as the Human Torch Johnny Storm said he’s a huge fan of Evans’ take on the character and wants to do it justice.

“I remember really enjoying Chris Evans’ performance as Johnny in the previous films, and it felt like this would be a really exciting opportunity; I was absolutely signed up,” Quinn told Entertainment Weekly. The actor added that he feels like has big boots to fill and wanted to make the role his own.

“I knew that they’d been talking about making the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Universe for a while,” Quinn says. “I had a talk with [director] Matt [Shakman], and it was very clear with the kind of people who they were attaching to it what they were trying to do with it. There are aspects of it that are very much a singular thing and its own thing.”

Quinn joins Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. Ozark star Julia Garner was recently announced as Shalla-Bal, a version of the cosmic herald, the Silver Surfer.

“I think that with the story of the Fantastic Four, it feels like we want to get this right,” Quinn continued. “There are aspects of it that are very different to other Marvel films. That felt very compelling to me. And again, going back to who’s involved, Matt, of course, the director, I think is brilliant, and the cast, and I’ve read it and the script is brilliant. It’s really brilliant. I’m delighted to have this opportunity.”

Marvel’s The Fantastic Four is scheduled for theaters July 25, 2025.
