Latest images Netflix SANDMAN images give us our best look yet at Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer

It’s been more than a year since the cast was announced for the highly anticipated Sandman Netflix series based on the acclaimed comic book series from writer Neil Gaiman and starring  Tom Sturridge as Dream/Morpheus, the titular character. Aside from some behind-the-scenes content during last year’s Geeked Week, the five-day virtual fan event, last year, news about the Sandman including an official release date has been in the dark. However, today the streaming giant not only unveiled details for the return of Geeked Week in June but also some new images from The Sandman.

Not only is Sturrige showcased as Morpheus but we also see him conversing with Matthew the Raven voiced by Patton Oswalt. Here’s hoping that Netflix releases footage of his performance as the character soon. But probably most intriguing is our best look yet at  Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer.

The depiction of Lucifer in the Netflix series is very much in keeping with the David Bowie inspired look in the “Season of the Mists” storyline as opposed to the version in the live-action series as played by Tom Ellis.

Additionally, the trailer for Netflix Geeked Week virtual event showcased some new footage from The Sandman with as Lucifer welcoming Morpheus to Hell.

Other cast members for the Netflix Sandman series include Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death; non-binary actor Mason Alexander as Desire; Donna Preston as Despair; Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, David Thewlis as John Dee; Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, the librarian and sidekick to Dream; Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, the chilling killer; ; Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, “Charlatan, blackmailer and magician”; and Asim Chaudry as Abel; Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, the first victim and the first predator, and residents and loyal subjects of the Dream Realm.

The long awaited series is coming to Netflix at some point in the future, with Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy) as showrunner. Gaiman, Heinberg and David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Terminator: Dark Fate, Foundation) are the executive producers and the co-writers on the project — an experienced team that knows comics and film quite well.

The Sandman debuted back in 1989 and instantly became a fantasy classic exploring Dream and the world of the Endless, six immortal beings, and the humans who interact with them, with sometimes tragic results.

In the past 30 years The Sandman has been one of the holy grails for media adaptation, but all the intervening time has only served to improve the technology and, realistically, the platform for the series.

Given the recent woes for Netflix most notably losing 200,000 the streaming service is in dire need to score a hit not only with The Sandman but its other upcoming content as well.

Tune in June 6-10 to see more footage from The Sandman and hopefully a release date announcement!
