One of DC’s most iconic heroes is getting a reboot with a TV show under the new continuity. Lanterns was announced as part of the new slate under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it will focus on two of the most famous Green Lanterns in DC continuity: Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Variety reports that Lanterns aims to be an HBO-quality event, and Safran compared it to True Detective. The two will pair up to investigate a mystery that “plays a really big role leading us into the main story that we’re telling across our film and television.”
As part of this announcement, Gunn and Safran also mentioned that a separate series from Greg Berlanti that had been slated for HBO Max would no longer be moving forward. That project was described as a space opera, while Safran says their vision for Lanterns is a more “terrestrial-based investigation story.”
Green Lantern previously got a big-screen adaptation in 2011 starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, but that movie was critically panned and never adopted into the wider canon of the DC Universe. The entire DC slate is getting an overhaul, and this announcement came alongside several other film and TV projects including a new Superman movie, a Batman family movie, and more.
