Gameloft noted that this was to “ensure that Disney Dreamlight Valley will be able to continue delivering on a premium game experience for all players. It’s important to us that we maintain our promise to keep delivering free content updates that add new characters, realms, clothing, furniture, and more surprises to your Valley”

While this doesn’t come as a surprise to many, given that the game was never a free title, it would be more likely for them to start as free-to-play and then proceed to charge players for the game.
