Insomniac Games has quickly become Sony’s most prodigious first-party studio. In the span of just five years it released Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and Spider-Man 2. Now alleged leaks from a ransomware hack potentially point to a Spider-Verse spin-off being in development.

Ransomware operator Rhysida recently posted what it claimed were leaked materials, including internal emails and personal employee information, as proof it had hacked Insomniac. Sony confirmed the security breach but said it had “no reason” to believe the attacks had impacted any of its other subsidiaries. In the meantime, fans on Reddit have been looking into some of the leaked documents for clues about what the studio is working on outside of the currently announced, upcoming Wolverine game.

So far they appear to have spotted (via Insider Gaming) potential references to additional Spider-Man games, including a Spider-Verse spin-off. One leaked screenshot mentions “planned projects including Miles, RCE, SM2, SM3, Spider-” and the date 2025. Another mentions “additional support for Spider-Verse.” It’s not proof of anything, and plans can always change, but it has players’ Spidey-sense tingling.

Given the massive box office popularity of the Spider-Verse animated movies, which are distributed by Sony Pictures, and Spider-Man 2’s own easter eggs referencing the portal-filled multiverse, a Spider-Verse spin-off would make a lot of sense. It would also be a seemingly perfect platform for Insomniac to experiment with some sort of multiplayer component as PlayStation doubles down on live service games. And like Rift Apart, Spider-Man 2’s Black Cat chase showed off Insomniac’s impressive portal-hopping tech, something that could be a central feature in a Spider-Verse game.

We don’t know Wolverine’s official release date, though a recent artist’s portfolio leak pointed to sometime in 2024. Beyond that, however, we don’t really know what is coming down the pike from Sony’s big studios. The PS5 maker has been quieter than usual about its upcoming projects this year. We’ll see if that changes in the months ahead. Sony didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
