How to play the ‘Hades 2’ technical test

Surprise! Supergiant Games, the studio behind Greek mythology roguelike Hades, has kicked off a technical test for its hotly-anticipated sequel Hades 2. This means that although the game isn’t out in Early Access just yet, fans are already getting involved – and if you want to be one of those people, here’s how to play Hades 2‘s technical test.

Before we go into the details, Supergiant has confirmed that the technical test will begin with a “small player population,” but this is planned to increase over time. This means that if you don’t immediately get access, don’t lose heart – you may be invited to play further down the line, so it’s still worth getting your name down for.

How to join the Hades 2 technical test

To be in with a chance of joining the technical test, go to the Hades 2 Steam page on your PC and look for the box titled ‘Join the Hades 2 Playtest’. Click ‘Request Access’, and you’ll now be in with a chance of playing.

The technical test is invite-only, which means that you can only play Hades 2 if your request to join is approved by Supergiant. If you’re approved, you’ll automatically be granted access on Steam, and will be notified via email. As mentioned earlier though, your current chances of getting into the playtest may be fairly low due to limited invites going out, which is explained below.

“As the purpose of the Technical Test is to test the game with a relatively small audience, we may not be able to honour individual requests to participate,” reads this FAQ from Supergiant. “We will do our best to conduct the Technical Test as expeditiously as possible, then launch in Early Access, at which point the game will be available for anyone to purchase and play.”

As for what’s in the test, expect to see “the first major area of the game, and other early-game characters, systems, and content,” though this will be “much less” than what will be available at Hades 2‘s Early Access launch. Additionally, it will only be playable for a few weeks, so don’t feel too bad if you don’t get an invite this time around.

While an Early Access release date for Hades 2 is yet to be confirmed, last year Supergiant said that the technical test would run “shortly before” launch, so there may not be long left to wait.

Besides Hades 2, this year is shaping up to be an excellent time for sequels – here are some other games we can’t wait to play when they launch in 2024.
