How to play co-op in Wartales

Wartales got a whole load of hype during its early access release. Players loved the turn-based RPG mechanics that left the gameplay in the open world entirely up to them. Storylines, player development, and decisions differ on every playthrough, and the permadeath element gives each one gravitas. Interestingly, along with the obvious single-player campaign, Wartales can be enjoyed co-op with up to four teammates, completely changing how the game is played.

How to play co-op in Wartales

Starting a co-op game in Wartales is actually very simple and pretty much the same as starting a single-player campaign. Begin by selecting the co-op Wartales campaign from the opening menu and go through with the starting team decision menus. Once this has been done, you can invite up to three other players to join you in the game.

Each player then selects who they want to control. This really only matters in the beginning stages of the game as it can be switched, and as your troop grows and shrinks, more characters will be available. For now, just choose your favorite.

In the game, there is quite a lot of free reign. Players can move around freely from each other, getting into battle, collecting resources, and discovering the map. There is a distance limit, but it’s quite liberal.

Be aware that if you get into a battle in co-op Wartales, your other teammates will need to come to you to partake in the turn-based combat. Make sure you’re not all too far from one another; permadeath is bad for morale. Once combat is initiated, you and your teammates alternate turns, and you can move any one of the mercenaries.

In camp, there is a need for more communication. Only one co-op player can control the Cooking Pot, and only one player can use the Strategy Table. Therefore, it’s important to assign roles. The camp is also a great place to start sharing resources. Inventories are private, so if you pick something up for another player, the camp is the place to hand it over.

Communication is key in co-op Wartales, so get yourselves into a chat server and get into the nitty-gritty of how you want your band of wiery travelers to conduct themselves.
